Pinoys are avid viewers of Web videos

MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – Filipinos are among the most active viewers of videos on the Internet, according to a study by research company Nielsen. .
Nielsen's report, “How We Watch – The Global State of Video Consumption, surveyed 27,665 respondents worldwide last yeat.

The report indicates indices, which means respondents are based as target groups over population. The index is set at 100, higher index means they are most likely than the population while lower index means they are less likely than the population.

The Nielsen report showed that the Philippines has among the highest indices of online video usage worldwide with 124 index points, just two points lower than China and Indonesia, both of which have 126 index points.

In addition, the Philippines leads in the consumption of mobile video at 182 index points, higher than Indonesia and China that have 173 index points. This means there were more Filipinos watching videos on their mobile phones when the survey was conducted in March 2010.

The Philippines also has among the highest penetration rate of television appliances with 98.8 percent of the population, with a TV viewing period of three hours and 30 minutes per day. However Serbians, Macedonians, and Americans spend more time watching TV with at least five hours per day.

On the other hand, ownership of high definition TV (HDTV) sets is still low in the Philippines and is pegged by Nielsen at only 67 index points. HDTV are units that have screen resolutions of 720p to 1080p. Many new widescreen TVs sold in the Philippines can already project in these resolutions.

While ownership of HDTVs among Filipino homes remains low, this is expected to grow as prices of such appliances are going down significantly.

The survey also analyzed if users are interested in viewing videos on other platforms, particularly the upcoming tablet PCs, 3D TVs, and Internet-capable TVs. It showed that Filipinos in the survey are very likely to want all three devices for viewing videos.

This means high interest in the Philippines, like all other countries in viewing videos in these new platforms.

The overall result of the study showed that TV will remain a universally important platform for video consumption, even as 70 percent of respondents in the survey said they have watched videos online.

There is also huge interest in viewing videos in other platforms, with the Asia Pacific region having a slight lead in the adoption of online and mobile video. With the potential of Internet-capable TVs, there could be more opportunities for marketers and media companies to interact with consumers.
